Heartburn Meds Can Cause More Hypo Symptoms!

By March 12, 2021October 7th, 2021Thyroid

Are you hypothyroid or have Hashimotos with heartburn or acid reflux (also known as GERD)?

Are you taking medications for symptoms?

I was on heartburn medications for a decade. I had what I was told was “acid reflux” so bad that it hurt in my back.

I was given a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) medication (I took Nexium and then Delixant after that stopped working) after a year of eating Tums. This is the protocol that conventional medicine follows. Treat the symptoms not the root cause.

That never heals the body and problems only get worse.

LOW STOMACH ACID is the actual culprit for a large majority of us with a thyroid issue because we have gut issues that are the root cause of our thyroids going cray cray!

The symptoms of low stomach acid mimic the symptoms to too much acid!

So let’s look into the common signs of low stomach acid:

  • Heartburn. …
  • Trouble Digesting Meat. …
  • Gas and Bloating After Eating. …
  • Food Allergies and Intolerances. …
  • Nutritional Deficiencies. … (which leads to hypothyroidism)
  • Skin Problems Such as Acne. …
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome. …(which leads to hypothyroidism)
  • Undigested Food in Stools
  • Feeling sick to your stomach after taking supplements

Taking a medication to lower ALREADY low stomach acid makes these issues worse!!!

There are other causes of low stomach acid too.

WHAT CAUSES LOW STOMACH ACID?

  • High-stress levels: Stress tends to reduce the production of stomach acid.
  • Aging: The stomach produces less stomach acid as we grow older.
  • Stomach surgery: Your stomach may start producing less acid after a stomach surgery.
  • Medication: Taking antacids and other meds for digestive problems can lead to low stomach acid levels.
  • High sugar intake: A diet thatโ€™s high in sugar can lower your stomach acid levels.

So what can you do?

Get your stomach acid up and like me, your symptoms can disappear. You will also start absorbing your nutrients better and THAT will make your thyroid extremely happy.

Here is what I did and what has helped many of my clients.

Take a teaspo0n to a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water 15 minutes before each meal.

or if you can’t stand the taste like me there are 2 different supplements.

You can grab these apple cider vinegar pills HERE

or if that doesn’t help your symptoms, which is what happens a lot, you may need something a bit stronger. Grab this betaine with HCL supplement HERE.

With the betaine supplements start by taking one before a meal then increase until you feel a little burning sensation. Most do 2-3 before each meal and then you can go down after a while when your stomach acid has had some increase.

Note: If you have an ulcer, avoid these.

Until Next Thyroid Thursday,

Melodye
