Magnesium For Your Thyroid Symptoms

By September 16, 2021August 17th, 2023Thyroid

When it comes to reversing your hypothyroidism and Hashimotos symptoms its important to check to see if any of your vitamins and minerals are deficient.

Because we have gut issues, we dont absorb vitamins and minerals from our food or supplements like we should (which is why I go on and on about healing your gut). On top of that they aren’t found naturally as much in food any more due to modern farming practices either so its important to do a blood test to see what you’re deficient in and to then supplement those things as well as incorporating nutrient dense foods into your diet.

Today lets talk about a very important mineral that can make a big impact on your symptoms…MAGNESIUM!

Magnesium is essential for over 300 processes in the body but its also particularly important for thyroid health and ditching your symptoms too.

I usually say to test and not guess when it comes to supplements but most everyone is deficient in magnesium. In fact, you burn through it twice as fast when you’re stressed.

Lets look first at some signs that you may have a magnesium deficiency:

  1. muscle twitches and cramps
  2. mental health disorders
  3. muscle weakness
  4. high blood pressure
  5. asthma
  6. irregular heart beat
  7. migraines
  8. weak or brittle bones
  9. eye twitches
  10. restless legs
  11. chronic fatigue

Now lets look at how Magnesium can affect your thyroid and your hypothyroidism or Hashimotos symptoms:

Magnesium is needed in order for your thyroid hormones to convert. Your thyroid makes T4 which is your inactive thyroid hormone. That then must get converted into T3 which is your ACTIVE thryoid hormone. This conversion is very important so if its not happening or not happening properly, you get lots of thyroid symptoms (fatigue, heart palpitations, depression, brain fog, anxiety, constipation, etc…)

Magnesium can also help to lower high thyroid antibodies so if you have Hashimotos this is extremely important for you.

The right kind of magnesium can help with constipation which is not only annoying or us but if you’re not pooping every single day (yes, I said every single day) then you’re not eliminating toxins from your body properly. Your thyroid is very sensitive to toxins so that means, MORE SYMPTOMS. You can read more about what your poop says about your thyroid health HERE.

Magnesium is very calming to the body and helps the body and mind to relax. It can help with sleep, and better sleep helps to combat against nasty hypo and Hashi symptoms since sleep is when your body restores and repairs itself.

It can also help with depression which is very common for people with thyroid issues.

Magnesium can combat inflammation which is at the root of thyroid disease. Less inflammation means less symptoms.

How to get more Magnesium:

I recommend getting magnesium a few different ways.

I have had great success with myself and my group and one on one coaching clients taking THIS oral magnesium supplement. Magnesium glycinate is the type of magnesium that works best I have found. Others can be harsh on the stomach or not as absorbable and I dont want you wasting your money on anything that won’t get you results. This one is affordable and super absorbable. I recommend taking it at night about an hour before you go to bed to help you relax.

I also take an epsom salt bath a few times a week before bed. I use 2 cups of  THIS epsom salt and add it to a hot bath. Helps me sleep so much when I do. Washes off the stress of the day. You can also grab some at Walmart, Target or any drug store. ENJOY a long soak !!

I like to take a magnesium bath flakes foot bath a few times a week too. Magnesium flakes are more expensive so I don’t do a full bath in them but a foot soak works to get that magnesium in too. I use THIS foot soaking tub. I use these bath flakes HERE.

You can also use a magnesium spray like THIS one. I like to spray that on my legs or chest a couple nights a week. It does burn a little and gets a bit itchy so after 20 min I rinse it off. Dont spray it immediately after a bath when your pores are open or it will burn more. I have stopped several middle of the night leg cramps keeping this by my bed and spraying it on my cramping leg. It was practically instant.

I eat a lot of avocados, pumpkin seeds and bananas too to get magnesium in my diet.

Making sure you get plenty of magnesium can go a long way at combatting your symptoms.
